Does Your Child’s Coach Care Too Much About Winning?
Winning is a great feeling, no doubt. But parents should be wary of coaches who value consistent wins over player development.
If the same kids are put in the same positions and given the same plays time and again, they will not become well-rounded athletes. They might not even remain athletes, depending on who plays where. Or kids might keep playing but at positions they don't like as much as others.
In both scenarios, the young players are not having fun. And fun is the top why kids play sports, according to all participation surveys. Coaches can make it more fun by allowing players to rotate positions, learn new skills and, yes, be challenged. It might add up to fewer wins but more joyful young athletes. That's a whole other type of victory.
